Cheap LCD TV’s – Find the Best Places to Get the Bargains

March 6, 2010

Although manufacturers of LCD TVs are slashing down prices, there are still consumers who prefer units they can buy at significantly reduced prices. If you’re watching your budget but don’t want to sacrifice the quality of your viewing pleasure, here are some tips for finding and buying cheap LCD TVs:

Check out discount shopping stalls and departments.

Even name brands have cheap LCD TVs in these places. If your budget ranges from just £180 to £350, spend a few hours checking out the units in these hallowed grounds and you’ll be going home with a brand new LCD TV that won’t drill a hole in your pocket.

You’ll find a 19″ Samsung SyncMaster LCD TV here for just under £200 and a 20″ Telefunken LCD TV equipped with High-Def panel for just £180. There are also great offerings from brands such as Daewoo and Bush.

Go off-brand.

This is a good tactic for you if you’re the type of consumer who doesn’t care much about brand names. There are several emerging brands today that are currently giving many of the top manufacturers some competition. Try brands such as Kreisen, Syntax Olevia, Maxent and yes, even Westinghouse, a very familiar name. If the £1,000 price tag on a 37″ name brand makes you cringe, you’ll be glad to know that many off-brand manufacturers let you have a 50″ plasma TV for a bargain basement price of only £1,200.

Buy refurbished.

Refurbished LCD TVs are a lot cheaper than those units you find on display at the local electronics shop. And most of them are actually brand new – except that they have been repaired or restored in some way. If you look harder, you could get an LCD TV at a slashed off price merely because it had a slight scratch or dent on the exterior – nothing more.

Should you buy refurbished, always go to an authorized retailer or dealer so you can be assured of quality.

Seasonal sales

Even brand names have to give in when the seasonal sale trumpet sounds. The science behind this is quite simple, actually. Manufacturers actually watch out for certain weeks or months in a given year when the urge to buy surges. This explains why there’s plenty of sale events going on come Christmas time – people simply have the reason to buy and they have the cash.

If you want to find a cheap LCD TV, consider buying during seasonal sales. You could get from 5% to as much as 20% off in case you’re lucky. Plus, there’s no need to wonder about the quality of the product.

Clearance sales

Clearance sales for electronics can take a while to happen but they’re almost always worth the wait. That is, depending on your purpose for buying and the specifications you have in mind. If you’re in the store hoping to find this year’s model winking at you from the clearance shelves, good luck. Most units sold during clearance sales are older units or those that have not have a lot of success in the market.

However, if you don’t mind the ‘age’ of the unit, this could be a good route to consider when looking for a cheap LCD TV. Check out your local retailers periodically and ask your friendly salesperson for a heads up about any clearance sales in the horizon. You want to be one of the first in the store should that happen so you can choose carefully from available units.

Panasonic VIERA G1 Series TC-L32G1 32-Inch 720p 120Hz LCD HDTV

March 2, 2010

Panasonic VIERA G1 Series TC-L32G1 32-Inch 720p 120Hz LCD HDTV Review

This is an excellent deal no matter which way you look at it. For 5 with free shipping (Prime member) and no tax, this one is a no-brainer.

The picture is sharp – maybe not as sharp as its more expensive big brothers, but sharp enough for any casual TV viewer. Be sure to find the right picture format for your purposes (I like “justified”, although others with weaker eyesight might like “zoom”, while others may prefer the wide angle if they are avid HD video fans. There are enough picture features to adjust it to your liking, including extensive color settings and more. And to top it all, it’s just plain easy to adjust using the included remote.

One caveat: you may find the maximum volume setting a bit low when you first plug it in, and you might even turn the volume up to 100% or so in bigger rooms. But there is an easy fix: go into menu, then audio settings, and adjust the base audio level to max, then when you go back to your remote you’ll find you have enough volume/headroom to enjoy any movie with plenty to spare. I don’t need a 2.1 or 3.1 speaker system; it’s sound is good as it is. I’m an audiophile, but I just don’t see the need to spend money on an extra speaker system to match up with this inexpensive, but good, TV.

Assembly? What assembly. The only thing you need to assemble is the stand, which consists of four screws. Easy peasy.

This baby is plug and play – I had it up and running in under 15 minutes. It features a very intuitive settings format.

All in all, a great product at a ridiculous price. Highly recommended. If you just want a no frills LCD TV with HD, and you don’t plan to build a screening room or theater, this is the ticket. Get them while they last!

Panasonic DVD-LS90 9-Inch Portable DVD Player

January 18, 2010

Panasonic DVD-LS90 9-Inch Portable DVD Player Review

The LS90 is the third portable Panasonic DVD player I’ve owned (the LS5 and LS55 before this). I bought this bigger screen size although my LS55 is still going strong and I really like the LS90 which is good for kids due to 9″ screen size, good picture, genuine 6+ hour battery life and decent speaker sound.

However all owners of the LS model Panasonic portable DVD players need to be minimally tech savvy and self sufficient to deal with the highly probability that an H03 error that will very likely occur at some point in your DVD player’s life – depending on play and wear.

The HOSSAN online tech fix involving the removal of 12 screws and gently resetting the laser threading is far easier than it first sounds and should fix most peoples’ units for a while.

But to some extent this is a band aid because in my experience, I have found the real culprit in this sleek, expensive and otherwise well made player boils down to a small substandard plastic cog. Anyone that opens up their player (remove all the back screws (store carefully), gently remove back, locate and inspect the small motor that drives the laser arm along it’s track. Attached to the motor spindle is a small metal cog that immediately engages a larger white plastic cog (that drive the laser advance) on a short metal spindle set in a small cradle. You will need to remove a few more small screws holding down the motor and laser drive cog assembly. The small white plastic cog is the achilles heel of the whole mechanical system and is prone is wear, and plastic flaking caused by friction with the metal surface of the motor cog – I am sure this is the real cause of the laser jam.

All other fixes probably act to loosen a plastic flake that has jammed the drive cogs. My solution on 3 different units (for myself and friends) has been to shave down the width of the plastic transition cog by about 1 mm and creating a very slight bevel using a razor blade or exacto knife. This allows both cogs teeth to engage properly without rubbing up against each others sides.

I must stress that this sounds more intimidating and difficult than it actually is in practice! Although fiddly – the parts are small, it is easy and very effective. A visual inspection with these suggestions will make sense of everything.

I cringe every time I read of someone discarding their Panasonic DVD player due to an HO3 error that is really easy to fix in about 15 minutes with a small Philips screwdriver and an exacto knife/razor blade (a pair of tweezers is also handy). Yes it is shameful that Panasonic hasn’t acknowledged and fixed this problem caused by a small humble plastic cog in the drive system especially with all the expensive sophisticated electronics functioning flawlessly. This tiny part probably costs less than 1/10 of 1 cent on a 0-0 dollar appliance! Shameful! But all owners of these otherwise sturdy and handsome Panasonic DVD players can get years of excellent return on your investment if you take the plunge and fix your own LS model if and when the dreaded HO3 message occurs! Yes it takes a leap of faith in this technological age to unscrew the back of an electronic appliance (need I say that it should not be plugged into the power!) and fiddle about with the inner workings. However this is a simple mechanical fix easily performed by anyone with the courage to not discard their 0 machine without some intervention! I must emphasise that in practice it is a bit fiddly but very straightforward and easy. Your biggest pain will be to carefully remove and store the screws you take out – drop one and you’ll spend 15 minutes on the floor hunting for it!
